Throughout the music video the ratio of the size of the camera frame is changed so that it is a small square which was used in the 1960’s unlike wide screen camera frames used today. However Lana Del Rey’s image as an artist is a cinematic vintage effect by which she is iconic for. This is mainly due to the time the music video is supposed to be set in, which is the 1960s. The editing of the video is done so that the music video can look as vintage and authentic as possible. This is used to further emphasise on family life and ‘home family videos’. The camera movement for various scenes is done by a hand held camera, particularly when they are focusing on the shots with the children. This gives the audience a feel of listening to Asap Rocky talk and his power over the audience as they are the people listening to him. This is a low angle shot of Asap Rocky speaking, from the perspective of someone who perhaps works for him and is listening to him. This is used to emphasise the Presidential power of Asap Rocky. There is frequent worm’s eye view and low angle shots of Asap Rocky (JFK) throughout the music video. This helps the audience to feel a sense of grandness of JFK’s life. This is to create an effect of a grand event of occasion taking place. There are also violins and firework sounds in the background, when there is none visible in the shot. This shot helps to emphasise on the point of ‘Happy family’ concept which contrasts with Marilyn and JFK’s affair which took place in the previous shots and pre-credits. The camera zoom’s out, so that the audience gradually see’s the entire frame, including the children. There is an establishing shot of Lana and Asap Rocky stood in front of an extremely large and luxurious family house, with their three children and a small family dog. Act as thought nothing is happening, which is reflected by Asap Rocky’s facial expression during the shot. This reflects John.F Kennedy’s behaviours in public about Marilyn, he is able to stay collected and not panic. Following the two second flash of events the next shot is an extreme close up of Asap Rocky in which he looks relaxed but thoughtful. This suggests to the audience this quick flash of events is perhaps memories shared between Lana (Marilyn) and Asap Rocky (JFK). After her close up we see a quick flash of events and small clips which last two seconds. This created authenticity and a real 1960s camera effect to make the shot seem as realistic as possible.Īt the end of ‘Happy birthday Mr.President’ there is a close up of Lana’s (Marilyn’s) face in where she is smiling and looking at Asap Rocky (JFK). The shot is pixelated when moving from Lana’s face to Asap’s face and is also pixelated when returning back to Lana for her mid-shot. There is a close of Lana’s face whilst she is singing which is followed up by a mid-shot of Asap Rocky, who is playing the part of President JFK. The microphone also gives feedback when she first holds it, this is to further authenticate the shot to make it look genuine as if it was in the 1960’s, as a lot of minor technical errors would have been common in the 60s for these type of stage performances. There is a use of ambient sound in the first sequence to justify to the audience that Lana (Marilyn) is performing to a large audience. The first shot of the pre sequence starts with an Ariel shot with Lana walking up to the Microphone on stage. This technique causes a real and authentic vintage effect for the audience. The entire first sequence is filmed in black and white, to further replicate the authenticity of the original piece sang by Marilyn. The first sequence of the song begins with Lana Del replicating Marilyn Monroe’s famous song sang to JFK, ‘Happy birthday Mr.President’. The genre of ‘National Anthem’ is 1960’s pop. This double role is meant to be the main concept of the video, where the contrast is shown to the audience and both points of view from both women are represented. During the music video Lana Del Rey plays both the roles of Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy and Asap Rocky playing the part of JFK. F Kennedy during the 1960s, it also includes the family life of JFK and his wife Jacqueline Kennedy and JFK’s assassination. Lana Del Rey’s ‘National Anthem’, is based on the famous controversial affair between Marilyn Monroe and President John.
